Hello Rhian,

I think it is less about "brands" and "promotion" and more about relationships, openness and availability. Bridging off-line media (ie print and broadcast) and on-line is another topic - although a very interesting one.

I would go a step further in talking about on-line communities: spawning off-line meet ups is an essential sign of health for your on-line community.

Networking is key in online business, or off. While it might help you get a job when your career is in the office, it might give you new projects or important news in an offline business. And it's a good way to meet new people, and have some fun which can help you work a little harder when you get back to it.

Great piece & advice at the end to invest time into important relationships. I meet many many business owners and professionals who end up constantly searching for new contacts when networking & forget those they already have a relationship with. This often leads to a huge amount of wasted time on social media when, in fact, it should save time in keeping in contact.

while a great percentage of my corporation's employees are working from client sites or remote (home) offices, I find those chance encounters in the hallways a big draw -- I oftentimes can get 45 minutes worth of communications and collaboration squeezed into a 5 minute chance hallway conversation. That's why I come into the office most days. Also always been a big believer in how physical architecture facilitates such chance encounters, and provides room for people to move off to the side and have those conversations. Both building and office space design can do much to improve the chance of innovation happening right in the workplace.

Thanks Andy and Dean. I'm still looking for good data, but the anecdotal evidence seems stack up. Things like Homecamp and the UKPA are good examples. The support aspect of informal face to face meetings is not to be underestimated too.

Agreed, and well said. The Chris's Brogan and Penn understood this when they set up Podcamp. We understood it when we set up the UK Podcasters Association. http://ukpa.info back in 2006 - the need to associate is strong. Other people are good not just for business but also for morale.

Great post. I think I'm most likely to re-use this statement: "Vibrant on-line communities lead to face-to-face meet ups. It is almost inevitable, and has been since the earliest digital communications."

Far from limiting my social circles and making me into some kind of digital recluse, the online communities I'm part of have greatly expanded my physical social network - and in fact spawned entirely new community memberships / leaderships for me (Homecamp being a good example).

Totally agree that we need to capitalize on both online and offline media in brand promotion. They both have their pros and cons, especially in a world that’s so saturated with the online. However, I think that it’s important to not pigeon-hole media as exclusively online or offline, but to consider the potential of bridging the divide. We’ve been thinking about this a lot with respect to our work in building online communities for brands. I think that ideally, online communities should work offline if they are to truly maximise their reach. We wrote a bit more about this here, if you’re interested at all: http://blog.freshnetworks.com/2008/12/your-online-community-should-work-offline-as-well/ Rhian James FreshNetworks
