Once I learned to speed read, I started to realize that people who read slowly are doing too much while they're reading. They think about what they're having for dinner, they're doing self commentary on the reading ("Man, this is boring"), etc. Then, they combine that with some skills that they learned in kindergarten when they were first learning how to read, like thinking about the pronunciation of words, trying to define vocabulary words they don't know, and so on. If you just read, and think about that, then you can take in so much more information.

Great article by the way.

Thanks, Bob - I had been wondering about that (newspaper vs book format).

The maximum line length when reading on screen text should be around that of a book. The assumption here is that this is something you want to read and digest, unlike a newspaper or an advertisement. That's why this type of text is set across a narrow measure and though you may not realize it, this helps you take in the words visually - it helps make a quick scan. Short sentences also help. I skim read a lot of material but stop and read a section carefully when there is something of value and at times I'll go back to the beginning. It works because you can pick up items of interest easily and quickly.
