The maximum line length when reading on screen text should be around that of a book. The assumption here is that this is something you want to read and digest, unlike a newspaper or an advertisement. That’s why this type of text is set across a narrow measure and though you may not realize it, this helps you take in the words visually - it helps make a quick scan. Short sentences also help. I skim read a lot of material but stop and read a section carefully when there is something of value and at times I’ll go back to the beginning. It works because you can pick up items of interest easily and quickly.

Thanks, Bob - I had been wondering about that (newspaper vs book format).
