I think that friends lists reveal something, that was once back then considered private and informel information.

Nowadays the relationships and bonds between people are visible to almost anybody, even past relationships vulgo break ups.

This is really a new quality in human history. Digital footsteps show and record your history - and you cannot control the amount and kind of information that is being collected and available to the public.

The Internet became the human über-memory. Big Brother isn't watching you, you are part of Big Brother every time you use a so called feature like a friend list.

It will be highly interesting to see how people deal with the fact, that living incognito is never again possible. Mobile phones equiped with cameras makes everyone around you a potential spy that doesn't care about your reputation while uploading a "funny" video to YouTube.

Only the strong survive - those who can stay calm and cool in the heat of the many awkward details available online to anybody that can handle Google. Remember that it is fair to say, that any high-school screw-up won't be an insider to a few people, but a potential next big thing on YouTube for the masses - world wide and in HQ format for decades.

What once was embarrassing and evolved into a legend becames a digital legacy, a public record.
