Agreed! We are much more social creatures than we realize, something I'll be writing more about in upcoming posts.

It's really interesting to think about how emotions affect our circumstances. Yes, starting to achieve does turn our negative emotons around -- usually. Yet I've met many people who have achieved amazing things, and don't FEEL good. That is not always a foolproof way to achieve what you want.

I think what you want in any given situation is peace. As I see it, you can't control very many things in life -- you can't control other people, you can't control where you were born, who you were born to, etc. The only thing we have absolutely foolproof control over is our emotions.

I agree, though, that depression is a different entity -- because in depression it is almost impossible to feel emotion -- let alone control them. We're probably very agreed on that -- and you've brought out some very important points. It truly does involve, like you say, reconnecting with the reality of what one can get done, and engaging with it. That's very helpful!

It's when parts of the depression lift that one can begin to work with the emotions. That's also why having someone who cares about a person can help so much. That person can gently encourage connection to emotions, thus helping the healing to be able to occur. It's hard to do depression alone.

Thanks for the introspective thoughts.

Hello, Janet. The issue of self-talk is an interesting one, as is the psychology of emotions. While I might not agree with all that is on your site, I do agree with the cycle you describe.

When we become overwhelmed, our self-confidence (and self-esteem) drop. That leads to all sorts of issues, from procrastination to poor task performance.

Getting out of that spiral requires reconnecting with the reality of what one CAN get done and engaging with it. Starting to achieve turns our negative emotions around.

Your ideas are great and important. I'd like to suggest in addition that we're often overwhelmed simply by the emotions we feel about a situation. So many times I"ve been overwhelmed with the demands on me, and wonder how on earth I can do better/increase productivity/workharder, etc. It makes me tired == many times too tired to do anything at all!

For the last many years I've been learning about our emotions, and now when I am feeling overwhelmed I simply stop. I ask myself what I am thinking, and what I am feeling. I listen to that person in my head that is telling me I am not as good as someone else, I'm not doing my best and I should be doing better, etc. Who is that person we argue with in our heads anyway? Why do we find that we are often trying to prove to ourselves that we are adequate?

When I really stop and examine my thoughts and feelings, I can usually find I'm believing something that isn't true. I've learned that understanding our emotions is simply the most important step to resolve those feelings of being overwhelmed.

We teach classes now (my husband and I) to groups, including military soldiers returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. We've found that when people learn about their emotions, other problems simply resolve. They really do become different.
