I think I know what you are getting at (thinking of inventions like DNA), but who were Tim’s co-conspirators? Metcalfe did the ethernet thing. Who else?

I’d be interested to know how Google manage that 20% time.

Good question. The internet is made up so many things that are generally invisible, but required to make it work (DNS, Routers, Switches, …). Vint Cerf is obviously another name that is there, but that was much earlier in the Internet’s history (in the 1970’s), designing the standards for IP which underpin the Internet.
